Dance shoots- How do they work?

Our dance shoots are 2.5 hrs long, seems a long time? Don’t worry there are plenty of things to keep dancers busy for hours!

It gives you time to have a look around and chat, warm up and stretch and a little talk from me on how it all works.

There’s usually time for 3/4 changes of outfit / look using the different sets and props. Its not a hard and fast rule, if you change quickly and have ideas then we can do more!

Its a good idea to check out our Gallery for different looks and activities/props etc

Dancers have their own changing room with make up mirror and their own facilities.

After the shoot its nice to have a photo in front of the selfie wall with the dancer!

The images go online within 2 weeks of the shoot to view and choose at home in a password protected gallery. The images are online for 3 weeks for you to order at home. We would urge you to choose early so you can enjoy the images as soon after the shoot as possible!

Testimonials

How should i look?

Natural is good!

HAIR- loose and natural at the start is good, then you can always put it up later in the shoot.

MAKE UP- not necessary esp for younger dancers a natural look is best for younger dancers. If you want it thats fine- esp older dancers but its entirely optional.

TAN- Again totally optional, the ones with mitts are really good these days and look very natural. Try and avoid tan lines esp with spray tans

What to wear?

The more you bring - the more options for different looks you have! You may think you are emptying their bedroom/floordrobe but at least you have choices for the shoot!

If your dancer does ballet ( and I hope they do!) bring pointe shoes if appropriate, tutus- show tutus can be good, practise and romantic tutus too. You can bring tights if you want a very classical look, but bare legs show musculature better, my lighting is designed to show muscles and shapes.

You can also bring other more unusual items, jackets, boots, tap shoes, jeans.

For guys- leggings, cycle shorts, short shorts, vests, big shirts, jeans can look good too.

  • Plain black leotards are a great start. Bring some colours too or any more fancy designs there are lots of good dancewear companies out there.

Swimsuits and bodysuits are great too!

  • Shorts/briefs and crops are great for a different look. Can be teamed with a large white shirt for a more contemporary look or pointe shoes for a more modern ballet look.

Can just be from Primark, Tesco etc Swimwear can be good too

  • It’s very good to show this side of a dancer too- a bit softer, more flowy lyrical and romantic.

Bigger the better! Throw that dress! It helps to accentuate the movement of the body.

We have large skirts that can be borrowed

  • Tutus always look good! Show tutus, practice tutus, romantic tutus, puff tutus. Even if you don’t do ballet!

We have tutus in different colours to borrow here too- red, black, white and pastel blue.

  • Most shoots are in barefeet so footwear is not necessary. BUT certain items can be great.

Pointe shoes- love them, but only if you are trained and generally Grade 4 and above

Heels, trainers and boots can look great to, teamed with almost anything!

  • Jewellery can be good sometimes, jackets, loose- oversized jumpers etc, quirky stuff that shows their character too!

“I was really apprehensive about taking Pippa for a photoshoot, she had only just turned 6 and was very much at the start of her dance journey due to being in and out of lockdowns. Upon arrival we were greeted by jon in they most welcoming manner, straight away all my anxieties were eased, jon was able to get Pippa to engage and work hard to ensure he got they best pictures. I've never seen my wild child so calm, she had they best time and still goes on about how amazing her time was with jon. The photos were incredible and really showcased Pippa to the best of her abilities, forever grateful for the opportunity xxx” Shannon Leathley and Pippa T

Read the FAQs below or contact us today.

+Do we need to bring any clothing?

Yes! Bring dancewear- leotards, shorts/crops, lyrical dress/shirt. Tutus, pointe shoes etc, and anything funky for a different look- boots/trainers, knee socks, legwarmers, jackets etc even fashion clothing items can look great. We do have an extensive wardrobe that can be borrowed as well!

+Can we watch?

Yes definitely! Its part of the fun and helps the dancer relax. Plus we have to have a parent/guardian in the building anyway. Teenagers can be a bit self conscious so sometimes making a cup of tea in the kitchen area can give them a bit of distance, as long as you make me one too!

+Where do the dancers get changed?

Dancers have their own changing room with facilities. Thats your space, I don't go in unless invited if you are in there.

+Whereabouts are you?

We are at Unit 2 the Dockyard, Star Street, Ware, Hertfordshire SG12 7AN. Its about 30 miles north of London

+Are you easy to find and where do I park?

When you are on Star Street , look for Star Street Garage on the corner, its a little industrial area. Turn in there and we are at the end on the left. Free off street parking right outside.

+Is there anywhere to get food and drink?

We have free tea and coffee and a fridge with cold drinks and you are welcome to help yourself. The town is a 5-10 min walk where ther is a Sainsbury's, Costa, Subway and Dominos etc.
